Featured Stories

Every person living with tetraplegia has a unique story to tell. In this section, we share the journeys of our beneficiaries – from the initial challenges of injury to the incredible milestones of reclaiming independence.

These stories are a testament to human resilience and the impact of the right support at the right time. Whether it is returning to a beloved sport, pursuing a new career, or simply gaining the freedom to move through the world again, these features celebrate the achievements of the Regain community.

James Gould

James was just 17 years old when his life changed forever. A talented and active teenager from Exeter, he loved sport — swimming, football, running, cycling, and lived life to the full. But one summer’s day, while playing with friends in the garden, James dived into shallow water from the trampoline and broke his neck.

He spent nine long months in the Salisbury Spinal Injury Unit, learning to adapt to a completely new way of life. He was discharged just one day before his 18th birthday, determined, but facing challenges he could never have imagined.

We funded a specialist adaptive add-on for his wheelchair, allowing him to get back outdoors, explore nature, and even rediscover his passion for sport

Danny Mavor

Danny was a happy-go-lucky young man, living life at full throttle. But on April 15th, 2019, everything changed. It was one of those perfect afternoons — the kind that calls for a ride. After work, Danny set off on his motorbike down a winding country road he’d never ridden before. A road full of corners, excitement, and freedom. Then, he lost control.

The crash shattered his C4 vertebra and damaged his C3, leaving him a C4/C3 complete tetraplegic, paralysed from the neck down, with no movement or sensation in his arms or legs, and reliant on 24/7 care.

In 2025, thanks to the generosity of Regain supporters, Danny visited the world-class Hobbs Rehabilitation Centre at Chedington Estate.. There, he worked with expert spinal injury specialists alongside his care team, learning vital pain-management techniques and rediscovering what freedom can feel like again. He spent time with horses, tried mouth-painting, and visited the beach for the first time since his accident. He even sat at a specially adapted dining table — enjoying a meal in comfort for the first time in years.

Now, he’s planning an epic Coast-to-Coast challenge across Scotland using a chin-controlled wheelchair.

Rosey Gregory

Rosey was just 19 years old when she broke her neck in a horse-riding accident.

Rosey was thrown from a horse that subsequently slipped and fell onto her, breaking her neck. Rosey suffered irrevocable damage to her C5 spinal cord which required an emergency lifesaving vertebrae rebuild whilst she was in a coma, then subsequently undergoing a tracheostomy.

We were able to help fund an electric add on for Rosey, which will enable her to lead a much more independent life.

Luke Orton

Luke suffered a serious life-changing injury whilst taking part in the Isle of Wight Rugby Sevens tournament in Ryde. He suffered a broken neck, also suffering spinal cord damage, leaving him paralysed from the chest down and without the use of his hands.

We were able to help Luke’s family adapt their home, so Luke could be reunited with them, which was a huge step forward in his recovery.
